Fall is here, and what better way to celebrate than with an apple pie mezcal margarita? Mezcal adds a nice smoky finish to this margarita, giving it a nice fall feel. Plus, a sugar and cinnamon rim – what could be better.
Apple Pie Mezcal Margarita Inspo
One spirit I had yet to work with was Mezcal. I have no clue why either, as I love mezcal margaritas. I used to go to Bar Taco all the time and order a spicy mezcal marg. Mezcal is simpler to Tequila, but adds has a smoky taste. I always think of Mezcal as the frontier cousin of tequila – the cousin who lives in the wood and cooks its food on a fire every night.
If you are wondering what the difference is between picture Mezcal and Tequila, you may read this article from Food and Wine. However, in short, “Tequila is typically produced by steaming the agave inside industrial ovens before being distilled two or three times in copper pots. When thinking of an apple margarita recipe I wanted to create for you, I thought no further than Mezcal. Perfect for a fall drink – apple pie mezcal margarita.
So you all know I pride myself on making you easy cocktails. I have no patience (and if you are here, you do not either) for long drown out drinks and processes.
Ingredients in Apple Pie Mezcal Margarita
These ingredients are most likely ones you already have in your fridge and pantry.
Apples. I used a Granny Smith and a Fuji. I like their contrasting flavors, but you can use anything you’d like.
Sugar. I used sugar in the raw. You, again, can use any type of sugar you prefer, but I am not sure how well brown sugar will work!
Cinnamon Sticks. There are perfect for making the syrup, but if you only have cinnamon, that is fine. Just sub out the sticks for 1/2 tbsp of cinnamon.
Mezcal. This is essential for the smokiness. If you MUST sub this out, sub it with tequila. But you will miss the complete essence of this drink, so I recommend you do not.
Lime. Essential for this marg!
Ground Cinnamon. This is for the rim. You do not necessary need this if you do not want a sugar rim.
How to make this Margarita
You will first make need to make an apple syrup. This is easy as can be, and very similar to the pear syrup I made in my Prosecco Pear cocktail. Grab an apple, cut it up (guess what, you do not need have to peel it – I know, I know thank goodness. I told you I am all about time efficiency. ), throw them in a sauce pan with some water, cinnamon sticks and sugar, simmer for 15 minutes, let it cool for 10, strain and there’s your syrup!
Okay, now the hard stuff is done and we can get to the fun. Add the apple syrup you just made, mezcal, lime juice, mezcal and ice into a shaker and shake! If you do not have a shaker, that is fine too – just stir it very well in a large glass.
There is an option to add a cinnamon rim, which I highly recommend. You will add your cinnamon and sugar into a shallow bowl. Then, grab the glass you want to use for these drinks and line the rim with lime juice. Once it the rim is wet, emerge it into the shallow bowl of sugar and spice. Perfect!
Then, carefully pour your cocktail into your glass. Garnish with an apple or cinnamon stick!

An Apple Pie Mezcal Margarita is the perfect cozy fall cocktail. The smokiness comes from the Mezcal, and the warming spices comes from the cinnamon.
- Apple Syrup
2 Apples (I used granny and fuji)
3/4 Cup of Sugar
1 Cup of Water
2 Cinnamon Sticks (see above for subs.)
Juice from 1 lime slice
1 oz of Apple Syrup (that you just made)
2 1/2 oz of Mezcal
- Sugar Rim
1 Lime Wedge (you can use the one you just squeezed)
1 Tbsp of sugar
1 Tsp of cinnamon
- Apple Syrup
- Cut your apples into bite size chunks. You do not need to peal them, but you do need to cork them.
- Place all ingredients into a medium size sauce pan over medium heat. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Then allow to cool for 10.
- Strain the syrup into heat resistant glass cup. You may throw away the apple chunks and cinnamon stick (or you can save the cinn sticks as a garnish).
- Sugar Rim (Optional)
- Add sugar and cinnamon into a shallow bowl. Rub the lime peel on the rim of the glasses you are using to drink the beverage. Then immerse your glass into the sugar spice bowl in order to get the mixture on your rim. You may need to twirl it a little bit.
- Combine all ingredients into a shaker, with approx 1 cup of ice, and shake. If you do not have a shaker, just stir in a bowl.
- Carefully pour into your rimmed glass. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and apple slices! Cheers.
