INGREDIENTS NOTES AND SUBSTITUTIONS
Flour. All purpose flour is almost always a safe choice and is the best flour to use when making this delicious sugar cookie dip. If desired, you can substitute Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Flour. There is some conflict as to whether raw flour is safe to eat. If you are worried about this, place the flour into a microwave safe bowl and microwave it for 45 seconds or toast it in the toaster.
Confectionary Sugar. Confectionary sugar, also known as powdered sugar, is the base of this dip. It is sweet, blends easily and makes the dip extra tasty. Do not replace the sugar with a liquid sweetener such as maple syrup or agave. This will change the wet to dry ratio and will make the dip too wet.
Brown Sugar. Brown sugar is also used in this recipe. If you prefer a richer, bolder tasting sugar cookie taste, use dark brown sugar. If you prefer them lighter tasting, use light-brown sugar.
Dairy Free Cream Cheese. This is the magic ingredient for making this sweet dessert dip. It makes the dip thick in texture, tangy in taste to balance the sweetness and makes it a creamier dip. There is no substitute that can match the texture and flavor of vegan cream cheese. You can find vegan cream cheese at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or most larger grocery stores. If you are not dairy free, you can use regular cream cheese at a 1-1 ratio.
Maple Syrup. Maple syrup provides another level of sweetness, as well as liquid to this dip. I do not recommend substituting the maple syrup for any granulated sugars like cane sugar or brown sugar as it would change the flavor and consistency of the sugar cookie dip.
Optional Sprinkles and/or Food Dye. Make the most out of the holiday and theme the sugar cookie dip! As shown in the pictures, I like to add a few drops of red food dye with white, purple and pink sprinkles for Valentines Day. If you are making a Christmas sugar cookie dip, make the dip red or green then add christmas colored sprinkles. You can do this for any holiday or any color you like.
Optional Flavors. Add a touch of almond extract or peppermint extract to enhance the flavor.
Optional Parings. Pair this dip with graham crackers, your favorite cookies, pretzels, marshmallows, apple slices, strawberries (or any variety of fresh fruit), chocolate pieces, or pretend it is dunkaroo dip and pair it with animal crackers.
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Step One. Add the cream cheese, vanilla extract and maple syrup into a large mixing bowl and mix. The easiest way to do this is with a hand mixer or electric mixer, but a whisk will also work. Mix until the ingredients are combined and the cream cheese is softened.
Step Two. Add in the dry ingredients, including the powdered sugars, brown sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon, into the mixing bowl and mix until a soft batter forms.
Step Three. If you are adding in food dye coloring or sprinkles, add 3-4 drops of the dye and 1-2 tbsp of the sprinkles into the dip and mix again.
STORAGE
This delicious dessert dip will stay fresh in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If you notice the dip hardens at all, let it sit out for 10 minutes.
If you make this dip in advance to your event, refrigerate it before serving and consume within 24 hours for optimal freshness.
I do not recommend freezing the dairy free sugar cookie dip or heating this dip.
